Invisibility May 31, 2007

A few months ago, I wished that I was invisible.  Just for about half an hour, and just because my siblings were driving me loopy and I really was tired of it.  So… I went and hid behind a chair in the living room.  It was dark and they didn’t find me, so I was happy.  Also, I knew that the next day (or somewhere thereabouts) I would be going to D.C. for the March for Life and would, consequently, be away for about 16 hours.  Granted, it was going to be on a bus of crazy, loud kids, but there is a certain invisibility in a crowd.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my family.  But every now and then… being invisible for half an hour wouldn’t be a bad thing.

So that was that, case closed, right?

Well, it came up again last week when I was talking with Antion.  I said, “Hello, invisible man” — simply because he had gone invisible on AIM.  He does that all the time.  He said, “yeah… that’s how I wish I was.”  I told him that he is not the only one who feels that way at times.  :-P  So then I started thinking of other reasons why it would be really fun to be invisible.

~You could play awesome pranks on people (this is the GopherBrane side of me coming into play!)

~Also, I’d love to be able to do the Wonderful Life thing and see what people’s lives would be like without me.  That is, I think that I’d love it.  I’m sure it would be interesting.  But it’s something which I really can’t imagine… since obviously I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have me in their life in some capacity.

But now, thinking seriously about it… God does not want us to be invisible.  Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 5, 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”  That doesn’t sound like invisibility to me.

Paul encouraged the Christians to follow his example which they had seen (Phil 3:17).  Peter reminded them that Christ had shown them the way that they ought to live.  (I Peter 2:21.)  Paul also wrote to Timothy, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”

That isn’t something which we can do while being invisible.  Christians are called to be SHINING in the world, not dark little patches on the shine of the world.  The world’s shine is shallow, but it is shine all the same.  We are called to shine like stars — consistantly and brightly.  Audio Adrenaline stated it clearly in their song Don’t Censor Me:  “I’m the salt of the earth, the city on a hill. My light’s twice as bright I’m gonna show you something real!”  Newsboys also captured this point clearly in their song Shine — “Shine, make ‘em wonder what you got… make ‘em wish that they were not on the outside looking bored… Shine, let it shine before all men… let them see good works and then — let them glorify the Lord.”

Our calling is to shine.

Do it.

And now we come to some funniness… May 30, 2007

It is High Time for some funniness around here. Serious posts are all well and good, but I have too many funny quotes to share with y’all to carry on with serious post after serious post.   Mr. K:  “What did Obadiah say then?”Antion:  “Well… he has a whole book…” Looking for how Jezebel’s wickedness did not work out well for her:Mr. K:  “What happened to her?”
Josh:  “She was eaten by dogs!”

Mr. K:  O_o “…it could happen to you…”

Mr. K:  “What makes people desperate?”

Sean:  “Situations.”
everyone else:  “Thank you, Sean.”

*a few minutes later*

Sean:  “Drugs.”

Mr. K:  “YOU are desperate for drugs?”

Sean:  “You said people in GENERAL!!!”

Mr. K:  “Just wanted to clarify there!”

Edward:  “Well, if you’re underwater, you get desperate for air after a while.”
everyone else:  “After A WHILE???”

(about looking for the book of Hezekiah)  “It escaped my memory [that it’s not a book].  Long enough for me to look for it three times!”

(about the times of Hezekiah)  “There wasn’t CNN then.  You looked over the wall to see who was out there.”

“Have you ever seen a large mouthed bath…bleh… bass?” [talking about large mouthed bass]  “It could almost swallow itself!!”  Rather M.C. Escher thought! me:  “Hey Andrew!  You did a good job being our fashion model tonight!”  Andrew:  “Yeah!”  *begins striking poses*me:  “You turned as red as your shirt!”Andrew:  “Yeah… I know…” “there’s no point in being obstinately different on purpose”  (how else would you be obstinately different?  By accident?)

Alright.  I know that I am preaching to the choir by posting this here, given the people who read my blog, but I was most highly put out by a catalog which we received today from CBD.

I always like to check out the Bibles, because I pretty much unofficially collect Bibles, especially ones in different languages.  Even though CBD doesn’t have many of those, I’m always interested to see what translations they have and what their reviewers have to say about them.  I guess it was a good thing that I got a wee bit sunburnt yesterday.  It may have helped camouflage the redness of my neck as I looked at the Bibles. The first thing which annoyed me greatly was The Testament – an abridged version of the Bible.  Excuse me?  Abridging the Bible?  Wow.  Which part of Revelation 22:19 don’t you understand?  “If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city”?  Furthermore, the Bible is God’s inspired Word (II Peter 1:21, II Timothy 3:16 and 17.)  We are human.  We mess up (I think that is a commonly known fact and that I am not breaking any taboos to tell you that!).  Who are we to decide which parts are necessary and which parts are not?  So yeah, I was already very frustrated about that.  But as if that hadn’t been bad enough, I looked over and saw The Contemporary Torah: A Gender-Sensitive Adaptation of the JPS Translation”. What?  AAAAAAAHCK.

I think I’ll try to do a few fun posts here soon.  But… *sizzles*… on the one hand, my, I get annoyed easily.  But on the other hand, God’s Word is extremely important.  See Psalm 119 for clarification.

Alright.  For some reason, I have decided to do a post on Josh.  I’m not exactly sure why he merits a post, since he isn’t even one of my siblings, or… oh well.

Let’s see.  Josh, to my dismay, just turned 16.  This caused me some concern as, first of all, I had no clue that he was that old.  Secondly, this meant that he was getting a driver’s permit.  Frightening thought.  Novel idea!  It made me feel old.  =P

Josh has a great sense of humor.  He is generally able to laugh at himself, but is careful not to hurt other people feelings by laughing at them.

Josh quotes:

“Never fear, Josh is here!”
“Philothephers. Philothacers. BLEH!  Ugh… oh… that really long hard word… Epi… your POETS!

42!! (Josh’s answer last year to every quizzing question which he had jumped on for no particular reason

Josh:  “Oh look!  A hunter!”
us all in car:  *look*
Josh:  “Isn’t he hard to see?”  (in all bright orange against green trees and a green hill… ) “yeah, quite hard.”

Josh has also become most helpful as my bodyguard.  For some reason, we often end up on the same team at guard-the-pins, and he stands in front of me.  Of course, I guess that there is a 50/50 chance that we’ll end up on the same team anyway, and that there are only so many places to stand, but hey, I appreciate it anyway.  =)

And then Josh has been MOST helpful with David G.  This week, David (solely to annoy me, and he admitted as much) began saying over and over, “You’re dumb, you’re dumb, you’re dumb, you’re dumb…”  So I said to Josh, “Would you please whack him for me?”  (It’s always better to delegate these sorts of jobs.)

Josh:  *prepares to run after him*  “What did he do?”

me:  “Oh, he called me dumb.”
Josh:  *gleefully runs after David and comes back in a minute looking pleased with himself.”

So yeah.  That’s Josh.  I also appreciated him not flipping out when I got a little freaked out on certain scenes on Spiderman 3.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Josh supplied his quizzing team’s mascot — a small, stuffed… thing… named Knuckles.  Knuckles (with his owner) provided much amusement for us all as Josh would hold him up and announce brightly to everyone in the room, “This is Knuckles.  Fear Knuckles!”  When things went well for their team, Josh’s surmise was, “Everyone has feared Knuckles so far!!”

Um… sure.

Hello, everybody!

How ought I to introduce myself?

Well, this is the second Calvinist’s Guide to the Galaxy. The first one is here. If I figure out a fairly painless way to transfer posts, I’ll do that. And I ought to warn you, this site is about as random as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

So.  Now for today.  Mom and I were discussing the War in Iraq.  I think it was because Dad, Abbie and I had watched Tora! Tora! Tora! at our pastor’s house today, and I was thinking about how in WWII people in America actually had to make sacrifices.  Have we had to make ANY sacrifices as a result of the War on Terror?  Sure, it’s on TV and on the news, but you can always close the browser or change the channel.

Maybe that’s part of the reason why Americans don’t seem to care about the war.  It’s not real.  I know that, even for me, it hasn’t really affected me other than insofar as it affects the soldiers whom we pray for.

And do I want to have to make sacrifices?  Of course no, I’m not that insane.  Anyway,  I don’t want to have to give up things… on the face of it.  And that is where counting the cost comes into play.

My final thought on this, for tonight anyway:  I think the war would be more effective if it were actually America against Terrorism instead of part of America’s army against Terrorism.

Somewhat deep thoughts tonight; I assure you that that is more the exception than the rule to my posts.

Gloria a Dios,

Anya
