Craziness on a Wednesday… June 27, 2007

Posted by Anya in : spontaneous degeneration, smiling is good for you , 6comments

… in other words, youth group was pretty much back to its normal, insane self.

Tonight we were talking about listening to God.  First, we had to talk about just out-and-out listening, as there are some challenges in that group with THAT (and yes, with people other than myself.  :P)  To make his point that you have to be focused on what you’re listening to, Mr. K had everyone get into three groups.  In each group, two different stories were read simultaneously, and everyone else had to try to listen to both.

Well, the readers in my group were Antion and Josh, who happen to be brothers.  Antion is loud.  Not all the time, but he certainly does have the capability.  Josh, on the other hand, is rather quiet.  Furthermore, Antion is generally dramatic, while Josh is… quiet.  :)

Care to guess which story was heard?

Part way through his story, apparently even Josh was having trouble paying attention, as he blurted out, “Oh NO!” *frantic searching for where he was, anyway*  Antion kept getting louder and louder as his story became more and more dramatic.  “Amber, speak to me!  Amber, speak to me!  Please Amber!  Don’t die Amber!!!!!“  He had warned us before he began that it was a sad story.  :(

Mr. K also reminded us that it is not beneficial to listening if we are easily distracted.  You kinda had to wonder (or, perhaps, did not have to wonder at all) when almost everyone in the room — probably 9o% of the people — turned around and looked at the same person.  ^_^  We got Andrew to blush!

Hmm… then after class we played line tag — like basic tag, except everyone had to stay on the lines on the floor in the gym (for basketball and such).  Hence, Matt and my conversation was cut rather short as we were on opposite lines and moving away from each other.  There were the goofy guys in front of me who did not exactly understand the word “Run”.  *glares*

Then we went outside and Heather and I gave those interested, and those unfortunate enough to be within earshot, Greek word roots 101.  Whee.  Oh, that was fun.  We went through agonstic, atheist, and amusement after starting with a cappella.  Apparently, however, we were completely off on what a cappella means.  Oops.  I know that we had the other three correct.  *shrug*  Jenn:  “I feel like I’m back in 11th grade English!”

Mr. K was telling us about two of his rather too-chatty customers… so chatty that they did not notice being put on hold, nor did they ever miss him before he came back.  O_o

Jay and I discussed taking Latin to Life (in Orlando, FL).  He need the help.  All I can say is that classically educated nerds scholars are definitely an odd bunch.  It frightens me that we both thought of it.

Poor Antion.  He asked a question, “Who all here thinks that we’re too rushed?” and was the only one who seemed to agree with himself.  ^_^

This may be my last post for a while, as I’m going to be… other places.  Doing other things.  :)

I just remembered something else.  Me, Emily, Abbie, and Arika were sitting on a couch.  Alicia looked over at us and said, “How many people can you fit on two-person couch?”  We offered to try squeezing her in there, but she declined.

Humph.  I typed this up last night but then the computer ATE it *glares at offending compy*   So, now I shall leave the title the same but completely change the entry.  :P

I just finished reading Lost Horizons by James Hilton.  Very… interesting.  I’m rather cynical of utopias, and I suppose even more cynical of those who leave them.  Such as whatever-his-name-is-played-by-Gene-Kelly in Brigadoon.

We went to the library today, so I got a stash of books (with two more coming — hopefully– on interlibrary loan!).

Today I elected to read Blink, which is about subconscious decisions.  It was interesting, but I don’t think that it was exactly… life-changing.  However, that’s just my snap impression.  ^_^

Okay. I have NOT fallen off the face of the earth. June 20, 2007

It’s just been busy.  Yesterday I went to a pregnancy crisis center to see about volunteering, came home and woodburned, and then we went swimming.  Today we had medical appointments and were out of town.  Loooong wait in the dear doctor’s office.  I played with Middle and Old English, decided that I’m not ready for Old and better work my way back, and proceeded to translate the first ten lines of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in my ME reader.  Yay.  ^_^  Then… um… yeah, I practiced writing a few Chinese characters.

We were going to go to the zoo, but unfortunately they closed earlier than we thought.  Boohoo.  =(

So instead we went to the Goodwill and some other store that sold Western stuff (they had some nice-ish jewelry but it was either stones which I liked in HUGE settings or pretty settings with ugly stones.  Or just plain expensive.  =p)  Then we went and had supper, and we didn’t get home till about 9:30.

Oh yeah, I also listened to part of the first message from the New Attitude conference.  ^_^  I like it a lot.  It reminds me of being at camp.  Anyway, they can be downloaded off of Sovereign Grace Ministry’s website, here.  For free!

Hmm… for some reason, xanga is not being cooperative.

YAY.  I think I have discovered how to do all sorts of fun things on our computer.  The paint program has finally begun working again.

Goodnight!

Jars of Clay review June 16, 2007

Posted by Anya in : I won't keep things purposely vague , 1 comment so far

Let’s see.  I got Good Monsters by Jars of Clay last week.  I like it.  Parts of it are pretty dark/depressed, but… erm… I like it anyway.  ^_^  (Mom would say that I probably like it because of the darkness…)

Highlights from the songs (in my never-ever-humble-opinion):

Work:  “I have no fear of drowning; it’s the breathing that’s taking all this work…”

Dead Man:  “So carry me, I’m just a dead man, lying on the carpet, can’t find a heartbeat; make me breathe, I wanna be a new man, tired of the old one; out with the old plan.”

All My Tears:  “It don’t matter where you bury me; I’ll be home and I’ll be free.  It don’t matter where I lay; all my tears’ll be washed away.”

Even Angels Cry:  “Forced smiles underneath the brittle, frozen light — proof that you’re alive… if you wake up in the night, walls are falling letting in the light…”

There is a River:  “And all of those nights, spent alone in the darkness of your mind… Give it up, let go, these are things you were never meant to shoulder… There is a river that washes you clean, there is a tree that marks the places you’ve been; blood that was spilled, although not your own… for all of these things, love will atone.”

Good Monsters:  “Not all monsters are bad, but the ones who are good never do what they could.”

Oh My God:  “Sometimes I cannot forgive… these days mercy cuts so deep…”

Surprise:  “And love is wild for reasons, and hope though short in sight might be the only thing that brings you back to life… surprise, surprise.”

Mirrors and Smoke:  “Love’s a contradiction, many mirrors and smoke… Even though I cut your wounds, you still deny they’re real… Love’s a strange condition…”

Light Gives Heat:  “Heroes from the west, we don’t know you, we know best… I want to see you shine, see your light not mine… ’cause light gives heat…”

Water Under the Bridge:  “But it’s only that grace has outlived our regrets, we’re still here; And the years roll by, and you hold my hand, while the shadows stretch over the land… crumble and fall in my arms, and we’ll struggle to hold on… waters, they rise and they carry our hopes and our dreams… we can stay…”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And now for some funness… the misheard lyrics:

(misheard by myself)

I heard:  The wisdom where the homefires rise.

They sang:  The wasteland where the homefires rise.

I don’t have a lot of prospects.

I don’t have a line of prospects.

boys in holes

er, yeah… that should have been poison holes.

Abbie heard…

oh forsake… it was all fools say.

looking hearted, separating…  broken hearted, separated…

all the cries of rusty children (should have been THIRSTY children)

and one of my favorites…

she heard “Rachel’s haters“… it was actually racial haters.

I think that the one which Hyarion misheard is my absolute favorite, though… the song said “all of the bright eyes“, but he (having perhaps had a bit too much fantastical education from his *cough* older sister…) heard “all of the dryads.”

created with QuizFarm.com

*freaks out*  My second-most similar character is LYDIA???  AGGGK.   Dear me.  *runs away from self*

Well, I tried downloading a sample of Max McLean reading from The Valley of Vision, but the silly thing won’t download.

Hmm… let’s see… poor Hyarion.  He wanted someone of “medium” speed to race him at the track (that apparently would be me) but I was a bit faster than he had expected… and… erm… *almost* beat him.  *evil laughter*

Oh yes, there it is.  I knew there were several other things which I wished to mention.

~Mom and I were having a stream-of-consciousness breakfast yesterday.  We somehow got onto the Greek goddess Ceres (from which comes our word cereal), and I said that she was the cereal goddess.  But Mom heard “serial goddess” rather than “cereal goddess”, so I started thinking of what a “serial goddess” would be, but Mom said that she was the serial cereal goddess.  First she took over Kellogg’s, then Post, now Quaker.

*scratches head*  Why was Dad looking confused…?

~We went on a rain-walk the other night.  My siblings went CRAZY!  They walked down our street singing yelling a DRINKING SONG!  On a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday night… oh beware of the stare of the rikki-tikki bear, all on a Saturday night!  *pretends NOT to know them*

~The one store at the mall has PotC jewelry.  As if I would want a locket with a picture of Captain Jack in it.  Eww.

TAGGED June 13, 2007

Posted by Anya in : spontaneous degeneration , 3comments

Well, as my dear mother decided to tag me…

“The rules are easy, all you have to do is write 7 random facts or habits about yourself in your blog. Then choose and list 7 people and leave them a “tag” letting them know to come by and read your blog, and see why.”

1.  I sleep with papers underneath my pillow.  Emails, something I was writing… I’m not quite sure what the theory is behind that, if they will just osmose into my mind overnight or what, but…  Hey, I have improved.  It used to be my entire autograph book.

2.  I believe in reading more than one book at once.  Currently I’m reading Peacemakers (well, sort of, I haven’t touched it in about a week, but it is still lying on the floor),  The Silmarillion, Valley of Vision, and recently I just read Gypsy Rizka and The Great Divorce.  I guess that I could have said that I also read rather eclectically.

3.  I am unbelievably absent-minded at times.  For instance, I lose my notebooks constantly.  Well, a few months ago I couldn’t find my quiz book.  Finally, one of my sibs found it and I almost said, “It’s a good thing that quizzing doesn’t require me to remember anything.”  Duh, yeah.  Just 20 chapters.

4.  I have been accused of spitting in people’s shoes.  That was an entirely false accusation.

 5.  I sang with a guy whom I have never met.

6.  Borrowers used to live under my bed.  They may still, but I haven’t cleaned under there in such a long time that it is difficult to be sure.  (And if you doubt that, I used to get letters from Spiller.  *nods*)

7.  I get myself confused with my mother.  That’s weird.  But even weirder is who other people get me confused with.  Atanvarne mistook me for David.  Elizabeth got me and her brother mixed up and said, “Sam, Anya, what’s the difference?”  O_o  Antion insisted that I had done something which I had not, and then finally realized that he had done it, not me.  Andrew (B) answered to my name and ended up being called “Anya” for a while.

Alright, well, I think that is enough randomness.  In case you need more, Andrew (W) felt that I should tell you that I did NOT have tunafish for breakfast.

In honor of that, Andrew is my first tagee… followed by Mario, Ringbearer, Abby… oh rats, that’s only four.  Oh well.  Maybe I’ll follow suite with CarpeBanana and say that I can’t count.  ^_^

Hyarion June 12, 2007

Posted by Anya in : Uncategorized , 2comments

*hums to self*

Alright, it is my youngest brother’s turn to be blogged.  (What?  You say that I’m not doing people in turns?  Shhh.)

Hyarion  is 9.  He has a lot of interests, but I’ll come up with a partial list

~history.  He’s NUTS about history.

~music.  He’s learning to play piano and has an amazing memory for music.  O_o  I don’t know how he does it, but he can remember long pieces.

~making noise.  (The music category kinda falls under here at times.)  He makes noise from the moment he gets up to the time he falls asleep; then he snores.

~knights, armor, vikings, pirates, cowboys, and so forth.

~teasing his sisters.  =P

~sports, especially football.  He has hyper-analysed Facing the Giants; they should have used him for a director.  He loves yelling “HIKE!!!!” and running at us.  Or at the couch.  Or at the wall.  >_<

~being silly.  (That would pretty much cover it.)

He has a lovely nose.  ^_^  He also has a mohawk at the moment.

Hyarion thinks that my friends are the coolest people on earth.  Lucky for them!  He also thinks that my stories are as good at J.R.R. Tolkien’s… lucky for me!  Talk about a devoted fan!

A few weeks ago at a church lunch I stole a bite of angel food cake from Hyarion.

Mom:  “You act like you’re his wife!”

me:  *thinks about this*  “I’m the closest thing he has.”  *grins*

Ah well, as a friend of mine has said… siblings are good for uninhibited flirting.  Hey, I can tell him that he is cute as many times as I want to.

Oh my.  Did I mention that he is ticklish?  Not a bit ticklish.  He is suggestibly ticklish.  If you start wiggling your fingers near him, he usually starts laughing.

A young lady in our church has decided that she will marry Hyarion.  O_o

Hyarion also is very good at coming up with questions.  He can and does come up with questions about anything and everything… especially at bedtime.

So that is some idea of my little brother in a nutshell, and now those of you who know him can comment and add what I left out.  ^_^

The Evil Coke Guy June 9, 2007

Posted by Anya in : spontaneous degeneration, smiling is good for you , 4comments

Getting up at… whenever it was… 5?  6?… at camp can lead you to notice things which you’d never notice if you got up at a more sane later hour.

One such thing was the coke machine.  Perfectly ordinary coke machine… except for one thing.  There was this little picture at the top, which I suppose was supposed to be an ad for coke, making you want some because it is obviously so good…

Well, as someone (I believe Madeline) pointed out, it is NOT a picture which makes you want coke.  No,  on the contrary, it made you want to run away screaming (once you realized what was actually going on).

…or, it could make you laugh.  That was what happened when I saw the same picture at the mall this afternoon.  So I took a picture of it, so that you all could be properly warned.

Evil coke guy

See that guy offering the bottle of coke?  The guy with the rather psycho grin?  Do you know why he looks like that?  He poisoned the bottle of coke.  We hoped at first that we were merely imagining this evil ploy, but then we realized… the clinching evidence… it’s not even a closed bottle!  He has already opened it!  Run away!  Run away!  See that unsuspecting girl happily swigging away at hers?  The poison hasn’t kicked in yet.  But that guy in pajama bottoms beside her… well, he does look about ready to slump over.

The early bird gets the worm.  But misses the poisoned coke.  ^_^

By the way, it seems to be a coke kind of day around here…  check out CarpeBanana’s latest, if you haven’t seen it already.
