Jars of Clay review June 16, 2007

Let’s see.  I got Good Monsters by Jars of Clay last week.  I like it.  Parts of it are pretty dark/depressed, but… erm… I like it anyway.  ^_^  (Mom would say that I probably like it because of the darkness…)

Highlights from the songs (in my never-ever-humble-opinion):

Work:  “I have no fear of drowning; it’s the breathing that’s taking all this work…”

Dead Man:  “So carry me, I’m just a dead man, lying on the carpet, can’t find a heartbeat; make me breathe, I wanna be a new man, tired of the old one; out with the old plan.”

All My Tears:  “It don’t matter where you bury me; I’ll be home and I’ll be free.  It don’t matter where I lay; all my tears’ll be washed away.”

Even Angels Cry:  “Forced smiles underneath the brittle, frozen light — proof that you’re alive… if you wake up in the night, walls are falling letting in the light…”

There is a River:  “And all of those nights, spent alone in the darkness of your mind… Give it up, let go, these are things you were never meant to shoulder… There is a river that washes you clean, there is a tree that marks the places you’ve been; blood that was spilled, although not your own… for all of these things, love will atone.”

Good Monsters:  “Not all monsters are bad, but the ones who are good never do what they could.”

Oh My God:  “Sometimes I cannot forgive… these days mercy cuts so deep…”

Surprise:  “And love is wild for reasons, and hope though short in sight might be the only thing that brings you back to life… surprise, surprise.”

Mirrors and Smoke:  “Love’s a contradiction, many mirrors and smoke… Even though I cut your wounds, you still deny they’re real… Love’s a strange condition…”

Light Gives Heat:  “Heroes from the west, we don’t know you, we know best… I want to see you shine, see your light not mine… ’cause light gives heat…”

Water Under the Bridge:  “But it’s only that grace has outlived our regrets, we’re still here; And the years roll by, and you hold my hand, while the shadows stretch over the land… crumble and fall in my arms, and we’ll struggle to hold on… waters, they rise and they carry our hopes and our dreams… we can stay…”

And now for some funness… the misheard lyrics:

(misheard by myself)

I heard:  The wisdom where the homefires rise.

They sang:  The wasteland where the homefires rise.

I don’t have a lot of prospects.

I don’t have a line of prospects.

boys in holes

er, yeah… that should have been poison holes.

Abbie heard…

oh forsake… it was all fools say.

looking hearted, separating…  broken hearted, separated…

all the cries of rusty children (should have been THIRSTY children)

and one of my favorites…

she heard “Rachel’s haters“… it was actually racial haters.

I think that the one which Hyarion misheard is my absolute favorite, though… the song said “all of the bright eyes“, but he (having perhaps had a bit too much fantastical education from his *cough* older sister…) heard “all of the dryads.”
